Life is Like a Box of Chocolates

Dec 16, 2016 | Posted by dawnalbemis@hotmail.com | Christmas, family, family tree, quilt | 1 comment |

My Father’s favorite chocolates were chocolate-covered cherries. Every year for Christmas my mother would get him a box. Personally I can’t stand them (though that didn’t stop me from eating them when I was a child – chocolate after all)– they are just too sweet for me, I’m more of a dark chocolate type. The other day I had a chocolate out of one of those unmarked chocolate boxes where you never know what you are going to get. I picked an-assuming dark chocolate round one thinking I would be safe and ended up with a chocolate-covered cherry and of course it made me think of my father.

I’ve been thinking in general lately of my family tree, except I don’t like the tree metaphor so much as that of a river or a stream. There are many tributaries that come together to form larger rivers, others branch off to form their own side rivulets, while others trickle out. But no matter how big or small or how eminent the river they all start with rain and all eventually end up in the ocean.

I made some progress on the quilt for my great-grandmother Cassie this week. Got the last row attached:

My method of taping the strip of three on the back failed me this time however – the tape decide to stick to the sewing machine as I was running the strip through. Much consternation. I thought through how to space out the cuts for the edge strips and how to handle the corners. Onward and upward.
