The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
With my great-aunt Elsie it wasn’t Tom Gordon but Dennis Eckersley that she was in love with, but no one ever wrote a book about The Girl Who Loved Dennis Eckersley, even if he did have, as Elsie claimed, the best hair in baseball.
I finished up Lib’s quilt. I really enjoyed finishing up the hand-stitching on this one, noticing all the coffee stains on the pattern book and wondering which cousins got which sweaters. Here it is all done:
At one point I was going to tackle these logically and go about them chronologically, but it’s pennant season, the Red Sox are in first place in the AL East and there was no greater fan than my aunt Elsie. How big a fan was she you ask? This big:
My grandmother and her three sisters, Elsie, Mary and Gracie were all big Red Sox fans. After all they grew up with a father who told them tales of when the Sox actually routinely won pennants and World Series. They would often gather together to watch games and were even interviewed by the local TV station.
Elsie’s quilt was a no-brainer. Red and White quilts became quite popular in the late 1800’s with the availability of affordable cotton solids and prints made with colorfast Turkey red dye. My mother set aside a couple copies of a Bangor Daily News article about the Red Sox #1 Fan, Elsie Bogert, so I have my printed material! I just need to settle on a good graphic pattern and get about making some red and white prints!
