Two-Timing
It’s been a productive if somewhat uneventful week. I finished the square for the dowry quilt from Grace’s quilt.
The idea behind the dowry quilt is to take one extra square from each of the quilts and join them together to make a single “Sampler Quilt” that will form my Dowry Quilt. Sampler quilts were often done as a way to demonstrate or teach quilting patterns to someone, often a younger quiltmaker.
Due to the heat I didn’t feel like getting the wax all heated up to put it on the steel backing. Instead I turned to the whipstitching for the rest of the quilt. This is a slow, laborious process but I find I rather enjoy it. It gives me extra time to think and reflect on the process and the individuals. In this case I found myself thinking of all of the dresses and shirts that my great-grandmother hand-sewed for her children over the years and how she had to do laundry every day at times because the girls only had one good dress to wear to school.
I think I’ve figured out how to attach the crocheted medallions onto the edges of the quilt. I’ll start on that next.
Lastly I have to fes up. Yes it’s true – I’ve been seeing another blog. I am the Workshops Editor for the Prowax Journal, a quarterly online journal for artists by artists. The 13th edition has just gone live. If you are an artist yourself, or if you are just interested in things artistic, check it out. This issue has some wonderful new articles on Navigating the art world, Curating and Assemblage plus our regular features: In Five Words, Studio Visit, Essential Questions, Q&A, plus Exhibit and Workshop listings.
